University of Connecticut Library

Uconn Library – Facebook Page

I chose my second social media evaluation to be about the University of Connecticut Library. The main library is located in Fairfield County in Connecticut. The Facebook page can be accessed by clicking here.

The frequency of the post is fairly reasonable, and the page is updated quite often. I must say that the page has daily, weekly and monthly updates. Rarely I saw the page not being updated for more than 3 days. Lots of news and events are being posted for those who access the page. The posts are about job openings on different campus that involves library matters, some posts are about the events that are about to take place, for instance, workshops, reminders of some new materials, and links to some important trends that the general public might be interested in. It is a mix of various posts on different issues worth getting a quick pic of it. The posts are displayed for all types of people, however, I am not sure if people who are not interested in library matters would like to navigate through the page. The posts cover a variety of events happening in the library and on campus. Most of the posts target students but it is designed for outsiders who might be interested to learn about a specific database and its search strategies.

Since most of the followers are probably students the posts are more about information and material related to what is actually happening on campus and on the other libraries of the University of Connecticut. I haven’t seen any posts about books or book panels happening within the library. The number of followers I would consider low because the University is well-known and there are not many people following the page, only 1.3K followers which I considered fairly low. The amount of likes is also very low, with 1.2K likes for the page. The likes for the posts are almost nonexistent. Few likes for the number of posts displayed.  It covers fairly the updates about events on the other campus libraries. The coverage of the posts seems to be very limited, and it targets university students. I doubt that there are many outsiders following the page. The list of followers is unavailable. The following list is low as well. I noticed that the library follows lots of database pages, local businesses, some other libraries around the area and out of state, and some local communities group pages as well.

The media used to cover their events with posts are basically photos. Photos are the main communication media tool. However, there are some videos regarding the university’s day-to-day life and some videos about library events or information about events in the community. On the headers of the posts/photos, there are some links to websites that better explain why the post was created and the information it holds for those interested. Engagements with its patrons can be only seen through the posts that are being displayed on the page, no other interaction with the community or with the students is available.

I felt that the library’s Facebook page is not well used. I would probably return to the page to see if there will be any interesting events that I could sing myself in to learn some important features about a specific database. Besides that, there is not much that would call my attention to visit the page again. I must say that there is not much engagement with the community that surrounds the university.
